Content and Design Inspiration 2

Nice Video player

NBC’s Nightly News has an online video page with a nice, wide screen player and thumbnail images that rotate as new video is loaded. Also, note the expandable banner on the page and commercial video that causes an associated banner to pop-up as it plays. Below the fold, they’ve included many links to other content. This may be for search purposes.

Online Privacy Concerns

Study: Online Privacy Concerns Increase

NEW YORK (AP) — Privacy concerns stemming from online shopping rose in 2007, a new study finds, as the loss or theft of credit card information and other personal data soared to unprecedented levels.

Sixty-one percent of adult Americans said they were very or extremely concerned about the privacy of personal information when buying online, an increase from 47 percent in 2006. Before last year, that figure had largely been dropping since 2001.

Google Experimental Search Adds Personalized Page Ranking

gexdigg.jpgGoogle has rolled out a new option in its Labs-based experimental search program which allows you to rank and re-order search results. The new experiment is reportedly showing up for select users only, but the help page says that the goal is to allow you to “influence your search experience by adding, moving, and removing search results.”

The new options appear as a series of buttons on the search results page which allow you to star a page, reorder results and even add a URL to a site you think is relevant. Next to each page link there’s an up arrow and an “x” button for ranking and rearranging the results, and any changes you make will be remembered the next time you search those keywords.

A buzzillion ways to present multiple offers above the fold

Site Structure/Design Concept

Vignette.com has a very nice header and flash player main offer. The integration of a movie player to the right of the flash player can be a good enhancement for our home page. We’ve also talked about moving the nav below the player, similar to hp.com. Read this post about the nav concept.

Enhanced Customer Support

Here is an example from Walmart.com that displays a nice aggregate page for their support page. They also offer a “Top 5 Help Topics” section.

Yahoo.com is another example.
